Uphill battle: Racers challenge gravity in offroad tournament. Vietnam Offroad Cup 2022, beginning Saturday, introduces multiple tracks and new challenges to drivers.
Right from the start, racers must use winches to scale cliffs that are 10 meters high and nearly vertical.
Vietnam Offroad Cup 2022 marks a milestone in the 15-year history of the tournament, with the number of race days increasing from two to three and the number of tracks increasing from 10 to 13. This year, there are 100 teams participating, while in previous years, no more than 80 could attend the tournament.
To navigate a steep cliff, assistant drivers must find a spot to anchor winches.
The 100 participating teams, comprising 200 racers, compete in four categories: pick-up trucks, SUVs, advanced and open.

Racing places heavy demands on racers’ stamina, especially as competitions span several consecutive days, including at night.
Vehicles use winches to conquer the toughest cliffs on Track 12.
Mud covers nearly every corner of a vehicle on Track 8. In this competition, teams must steer their vehicles in an 8-shape, as well as make multiple rounds.
This year, the road’s elevation has been reduced by 500 millimeters, and water was added to create a muddy terrain.
Team 412 competes on Track 8.
This year, the tournament sees racers of all genders and of different nationalities.
On Track 11, racers are required to traverse a jungle and dry stream.

The mud pit proves to be a challenge for many drivers. To get past it, drivers need to find ground solid enough for anchors.
After getting past the mud pit, teams would use winches to conquer the final cliff and cross the finish line.
Vietnam Offroad Cup 2022, lasting from Nov. 4 to 6, takes place in Hanoi’s Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism.
